A gatekeeper (from the Middle Latin portenarius for the "gatekeeper" or "doorkeeper" to the Latin porta for the "gate", the "gate" or the "passage") monitors incoming and outgoing people or the movement of goods in a building or a demarcated area. His other tasks, the opening and closing part of the doors, gates and barriers as well as the safe storage and, where appropriate, issue keys , otherwise in serving as a key space gatehouse  (image) stored centrally and securely guarded are.

In the Middle Ages, the office of porter (lat. Portarius ) was an important office in monasteries .

The function of the porter / doorman is already mentioned in the Bible, e.g. B. in the Old Testament ( 2 Kings 22.4  ELB ); ( 1 Chronicles 9: 17-27  ELB ); ( Ps 84.10  ELB ).
