Portfolio (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portfolio was a magazine in England, which was published by the publicist and diplomat David Urquhart (1805-1877) from 1835 to 1837.

This political journal appeared in individual issues that were combined into anthologies. The main subjects of the magazine dealt with the publication of diplomatic documents. One focus of the publications concerned documents of Russian origin that had remained secret until then, which were intended to show the expansive and anti-freedom goals of Russian foreign policy: " the full development of the vast projects of conquest and dominion ".

The official title of the magazine was: The Portfolio or a Collection of State Papers etc. etc. illustrative of the History of our Times . The intention of the editor Urquhart was, "of giving a connected publicity to a mass of Foreign State Papers most deeply affecting this country, as also the public relations, and the political position of the various members of the community of nations".

Friedrich Meinecke wrote about this magazine, it worked " on the large audience as a sensation and as a weather sign of a perhaps approaching Anglo-Russian and then global war ". In Germany, the journalist and assessor at the Berlin City Court , Eduard Fischel , found an imitator who published the magazine “ Das neue Portfolio. A collection of important documents and pieces of files on contemporary history ”.
