PostScript Printer Description

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PPD is the abbreviation for PostScript Printer Description (in German  PostScript printer description ). This is a text file that describes the special properties of a PostScript printer. This allows the printing routines of the operating system (or the printing program) to take into account the available image resolutions , screening methods, paper sizes, paper trays, built-in fonts , etc. and offer the user a printer-specific selection, although the same printer driver is typically used for all PostScript printer models .

When installing most current operating systems, in addition to a PostScript printer driver, a number of PPDs for the most common printer models are installed.
