Postal delivery district

A delivery district of Deutsche Post AG is the area that is supplied by a deliverer.
There are a total of 54,200 delivery districts.
A delivery district is a subset of one or more postal code areas. It consists of a number of streets and house numbers. During the sorting, an area sorted by postcode is further sorted into delivery districts in the mail center according to the stored street and house number list. The deliverer then still has to put the mail items in their delivery order, with delivery order sorting machines also performing pre-sorting for this purpose.
If a delivery area cannot be served on one day, it will be closed. Then all other deliverers take over a part of the delivery district in front of their actual delivery district in order to ensure the delivery of the failed delivery district. In this case, the sorting must also be carried out by another employee, who then has to sort two districts.
Austria
The Austrian delivery network is similar to the German delivery network. The Austrian Post distinguishes the Briefzustellbezirke called districts, by four-digit numbers, which always end with a 0 (zero). A distinction is made between a local and a rural delivery district. Local delivery districts begin with a 0, 1 or 2, rural delivery districts with a 9, e.g. B. 0010 for the 1st local delivery district or 9010 for the 1st rural delivery district. Each delivery district is preceded by the zip code of the respective delivery base, e.g. B. 1010 0010 for Vienna 1st district, local area 1. For the delivery of unaddressed mail, the area is divided into two halves, i. H. the final digit is 1 or 2 instead of 0. This is only used internally.
The system is structured in the same way for parcel post, but no distinction is made between rural and local delivery districts. The parcel delivery districts start with 6, e.g. B. 6010 for a parcel delivery district.
