Pot boiler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A potboiler or pot boiler is an artistic work in which the focus is on earning quick money or securing a permanent or stable income. It can be literary works , pictures, musical compositions , films or even games . The term has been used in the English language since 1854, but it is also used in other languages as a terminus technicus .

As a hint, “artistic values” were also presented as being for sale. The word describes in a figurative sense the compulsion of an artist to have to earn his living in order to obtain the fuel to heat his cooking pot .

One of the most famous potboilers is the Christmas story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens . It shows that works that are mainly written out of compulsion to earn money are not always of below average quality.
