from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Power Big Meet is the world's largest classic car festival for American vehicles. According to the organizers, the event brings together around 20,000 classic US vehicles from all over Europe in Västerås , Sweden . The main focus is on vehicles built between 1950 and 1970. The festival always takes place during the first weekend in July and runs from Thursday to Sunday.

history

The US car meeting in Sweden started in 1978. At that time, around 80 vehicles met in southern Sweden. The following year the meeting moved to the city of Skövde , where the car manufacturer had Volvo engines manufactured. Here the meeting gained further interest and was held in Jönköping on Lake Vättersee and Norrköping on the Baltic Sea in the following years. The Big Power Meet has been held at Västerås airfield since 1984. In 2004, 12,000 vehicles took part. Ten years later, 17,000 automobiles and 200,000 visitors took part.

The reason for the high density of American classic cars in Sweden is that the government imported many vehicles from the USA after the Second World War to meet the demand for vehicles. There were also many Swedish emigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries who supplied their relatives with vehicles from the New World.
