Preference matrix

The preference matrix is a widely used tool to prioritize certain criteria or facts. It is used in business management (e.g. prioritization of company goals), controlling (e.g. prioritization of projects), project management (e.g. prioritization of company goals) or in quality management (e.g. prioritization of customer requirements) .

General

The preference matrix is ​​a simple and effective tool and is based on the principle of pairwise comparison. Each criterion is compared with one another and the more important criterion is noted. The pairwise comparison answers the question “What is more important?”. This procedure gives a structured ranking. The criterion with the most mentions is the most important criterion.

In the following example, the company goals are to be analyzed and evaluated using the preference matrix. The aim is to find out which corporate goal is the most important. In this example, the goals are numbered from 1 to 5 for the sake of simplicity.

First, create a matrix in which you can order the targets in the rows and columns of the matrix. Write the goals in the appropriate row and column headings. Then compare the two corresponding targets at the intersection of each row and column (pairwise comparison). The goal that is more important than the other is noted in the appropriate cell. Once you have made all the comparisons, analyze the preference matrix by counting all mentions per goal and then sorting the goals in descending order according to the frequency of the mentions.
