Standard of the Principe de España

Príncipe de España ( Prince of Spain ) was the title created by law in 1969 to designate Juan Carlos I as the legitimate successor of General Francisco Franco as head of state of Spain. Juan Carlos I held this title until November 22, 1975, when he succeeded him as head of state after Franco's death.

The title was associated with the salutation Royal Highness and the military honors due to the captain-general . In 1971 the troop flag and the standard of the Príncipe de España were officially established.

The wife of Juan Carlos I, Sophia of Greece , led the feminine form of Princesa de España as prince consort until she became Queen of Spain with the accession of Juan Carlos I.
