Presidio Park

The Presidio Park is a historical urban park in San Diego , California . It is located on a hill from which the old town of San Diego can be seen. The park includes the Mission San Diego de Alcalá and the ruins of the San Diego Presidio, an old fort. This is the first settlement point for European settlers in California. The park is 16 hectares.

history

Before the settlement by the Europeans, the Kumeyaay colonized the place for centuries.

Mission San Diego was founded in 1769 where the park is today and represents the first settlement in California by European settlers. Shortly after the mission was established, it grew into a settlement. However, the settlement was abandoned after Mexico gained independence , so the buildings fell into disrepair and the material was used to build buildings at the foot of the hill.

In 1907, George Marston, a San Diego philanthropist, bought the hill with the aim of preserving the historic site. By 1925, the park was built with private funds from Marston based on plans by John Nolan. He also had the Junípero Serra Museum built by 1928. In 1929, 160 years after the mission was founded, Marston donated the park to the City of San Diego. Nowadays the park is accessible to everyone.

free time activities

The Junípero Serra Museum , which contains the history of San Diego, is located in the park area . There are also around 3 kilometers of hiking trails on the site, as well as green areas for picnics.
