Trial lecture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trial lectures or trial courses are usually held in connection with a habilitation or an appointment procedure for a professorship. The aim is to determine whether the applicant is capable of academic teaching and scientific discussion within the framework of the scientific field and whether they have technical and didactic competence .

Procedure

The post-doctoral candidates or applicants who are qualified to do so usually hold two trial courses at the university . The topic of at least one trial course is determined as a compulsory topic at the suggestion of the habilitation committee or the appointment committee and the candidates are informed in writing two to four weeks before the actual date of the lecture .

The event is open to the university and takes place in the normal course of lectures in front of students. The duration can be 45 to 90 minutes. As a rule, a colloquium with the respective commission takes place afterwards .

The participation of the respective members of the habilitation committee or the appointment committee is mandatory; Reviewers from other universities, members of the Senate , the respective faculty council and all professors belonging to the faculty are invited.

Trial lecture / course

Usually two lectures are required, with one lecture with a compulsory topic and another with a freely chosen topic. The topic of the compulsory lecture is also formulated very generally and there are many possibilities to fill the title of the lecture with content. A lecture in the sense of a course is to be dealt with didactically accordingly.

The most important points to consider during the trial lecture are:

  • Clarify beforehand who will be listening, if possible adjust the presentation to their previous knowledge.
  • Introduce yourself briefly at the beginning.
  • Asking questions, involving the audience is extremely important!
  • Structure the lecture well ( red thread ), speak slowly and clearly, keep eye contact.
  • Make repetitions / summaries, do not want to convey too much material (rather prepare a part that can be left out if necessary), stick to the topic.
  • Stick to the agreed time limits as closely as possible (45 minutes including presentation and discussion, therefore a maximum of 30 minutes pure lecture duration are normal).

rating

The evaluation of the trial course is usually based on a standardized questionnaire with z. B. Questions about professional competence, application relevance, didactics, structure, comprehensibility, use of media, involvement of students, time management, personality, overall impression, etc.
