Project Iceworm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Project Iceworm was the name of a United States project to set up a system of mobile, nuclear missile launch sites in Greenland that would be hidden under the Greenland Ice Sheet . The territory of the Soviet Union should be able to be bombed quickly with nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear war . The studies began in 1958. Up to 600 rockets should be stationed.

Among other things, Camp Century was built in 1959 , an underground military base with a nuclear energy supply. But it was shut down and given up again in 1967. As a result of the ice melting, meltwater contaminated with toxins and radioactivity could end up in the sea.
