Promises is a song by the dubstep trio Nero that was first released on August 5, 2011 on iTunes . Nero himself was the producer and copywriter.

Skrillex produced a remix of the song together with Nero, the song gained great fame because of its use in a commercial for a laptop from HP . The August 2012 remix had over 13,500,000 views on YouTube.

The text is about how a man and a woman love each other, but their relationship could be in danger if they break the rules and promises of the society in which they live ( English Promises ) by defending themselves against the authorities ("[ …] Telling me that you'll be sweet, and you'll never want to leave my side, as long as I don't break these… Promises, and they still feel all so wasted on myself […] ”).

Music video

The official music video was first released on YouTube on July 7, 2011 . There it is four minutes and sixteen seconds long. The video is about a future in which people will be forced to use drugs. As in the song, the loving couple talks about their relationship, which would break up if they resisted the lead. But they decide to spit out the pills they were forced to take. The couple kiss, after which they are torn apart. In August 2012 it received over 15,700,000 clicks there. The director was Ben Newman.

Chart placements

The single became Nero's first number one hit in the UK by entering the top spot on August 20, 2011. The single sold 46,700 copies in the first week, the lowest number in over 21 months. In total, the title stayed in the charts for seven weeks. In Germany, he was also ranked 67th in two weeks, 34th in Switzerland, 28th in Austria and 70th in the United States. In Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United States, the song only entered the charts in 2012 after it became known through HP advertising.

criticism

The song received mostly positive reviews.

  • Digital Spy's Robert Copsey said Promises was one of Nero's hottest and most mind-boggling publications and gave it four stars.
  • A writer from Unreality Shout gave it a positive review and 5 stars.
  • Billboard's Kerri Mason reviewed the remix of Skrillex and Nero, saying that it sounds strange out of nowhere, but it would be pure adrenaline on a dance floor or something similar.
