Protestant Church (Westheim)
The Protestant Church in Westheim (Palatinate) is the church of a congregation of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate in the district of Germersheim . Together with Lingenfeld, the parish forms the Protestant parish Westheim-Lingenfeld, with a Protestant church (Prot. Christ Church) also located in Lingenfeld.
Early Westheim church history and previous buildings
The first mention of a church in Westheim can be found in a document dated February 8, 1241. On this day, Provost Berthold zu Speyer left the patronage rights of his provost and the income of the church in Westheim to the collegiate chapter at St. Guido in Speyer. The church was dedicated to Saint Mauritius and was located on the site of the present church. In 1533 a new building was built or at least a major renovation was carried out. Like the entire Electoral Palatinate, Westheim was seized by the Reformation in 1556 . Due to the War of the Spanish Succession and the passage of time, the church was dilapidated in the 18th century. On December 5, 1789, the construction of a new church was finally approved by the cathedral chapter and the St. Guido monastery.
Current construction (1791/92)
The construction activities took place in the years 1791/92 after disputes about the financing and responsibilities and the demolition of the old church.
After a lightning strike set fire to the roof structure on the late evening of April 3, 1899, a major renovation of the church was carried out by 1900. On March 24, 1945, towards the end of the Second World War, the church was badly damaged by artillery hits and low-flying aircraft. As a result, an emergency roof was built in the summer of 1946. The current spire is from 1954. Other major renovations took place from 1977 to 1980.
organ
The church organ (manufacturer: Heinrich Voith) dates back to 1895. It is a cone loading organ with a pneumatic play and stop action. The instrument has 18 registers (approx. 1,000 pipes) on two manual works and a pedal. The wind is supplied via a magazine bellows, which can be operated by means of a mechanical pedal system or an electric fan. In 2003 the organ was completely renovated taking historical aspects into account.
