However, it is the fastest growing religious minority , currently accounting for 0.5 to 2% of the population (roughly one million).

Protestantism is growing most strongly among the ethnic minorities ( Montagnards ), such as the Hmong , Ede , Jarai and the Bahnar . Two thirds of the Protestants belong to the mountain peoples.

About 10,000 people are members of Pentecostal churches. There are approximately 39,039 members of the Bergvölkerkirchen . In 2001 the number of followers of illegal house churches was 200,000.

The first Protestant organization recognized by the government is the Evangelical Church of North Vietnam , founded in 1963 . The officially recognized Protestant churches are the Southern Evangelical Church of Vietnam , the Evangelical Church of Vietnam North , part of the Mennonite Church , the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Grace Baptist Church in Ho Chi Minh City .

Legal situation

The constitution guarantees freedom of religion . Several hundred house churches of minority peoples were confiscated or destroyed after the communist takeover in 1975. In 2005 there was pressure on Protestants in villages in northern Vietnam to renounce their faith. In 2005 hundreds of house churches closed in 2001 were allowed to reopen . A film made in 2007 documents the secret churches and their persecution by the authorities.

On November 19, 2006 there was a historical service of the Catholic Archdiocese and the Evangelical Church of North Vietnam.

In July 2012, security forces violently broke up a church service in a northern province. In communist countries, Christians were and are massively harassed.
