Psammophores

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psammophore (Greek psammos = sand; phorein = to wear) is a hair structure below the head in representatives of some species of ants , for example of the genus Pogonomyrmex (see picture). The psammophore helps ants to collect and carry smaller particles, depending on the species, these can be: fine sand and stones (when building the nest), smaller seeds (when feeding in), or even eggs.

Psammophores are an important feature for identifying genera or species.
