The Puch Ranger is a sturdy, light off-road moped that was manufactured on behalf of the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in the Spanish Puch plant in Avello in Gijón between 1982 and 1987. It was mainly sold in Austria and Germany. In Spain it was sold as the Puch "Minicross TT" with some modifications.

history

The bucket frame mopeds , which had been developed from the MS and DS series, were able to cover an important segment of the demand for mopeds in Austria and the most important export countries.

The first Puch moped to have a tubular frame was the MC 50 . It was presented in 1965 and built over 30,000 times. The Puch MC50 had a foot-shifted three-speed motor with fan cooling. Among other things, it was very popular among young people because of its sporty appearance and the extensive possibilities for increasing performance. Even Puch himself offered tuning kits.

It wasn't until 1972 that the MC50 got a successor, the M50 Cross. The M50 Cross had a wind-cooled four-speed engine. The M 50 Cross was not even produced 4000 times and is rarely seen today. In the last model year, the model received a different tank and a different front wheel fender.

In 1976, the two aforementioned models, which had previously been produced in Graz , were replaced by a model of the Puch Cobra 4T built in the Spanish Puch factory in Avello . Another "Terrain Cobra" , the Cobra 6 C, which was presented in 1978, had 6 gears, unlike all previous models. It was delivered both as a moped and as a small motorcycle. In 1979 the Cobra T was redesigned and sold as "Ranger 4TL" for the German market.

In contrast to the Cobra 4T, the Ranger 4TL had a tachometer and 4 indicators and had changes in the tank, air filter box, fork, seat and rear fender. The Ranger 4TL was delivered in black. The first Ranger 4TL up to serial number 4302307 had a side stand on the right and up to serial number 4300215 a luggage rack with only one fastening strap on the left and right of the frame, from model 4302308 the Ranger 4TL got a main stand (or also called a middle stand, like the model Ranger TT ) and the luggage rack from serial number 4300216 was given an additional fastening strap on the left and right of the frame, as this was a weak point.,

The Ranger 4TL later appeared on the Austrian market. The Ranger TT model appeared at the same time. This differed from the TL in that it had a headlight trim, the exhaust system, the rear fender, the seat bench, the luggage rack, and another air filter box (since the exhaust of the Ranger TT runs through the air filter box on the right, the position of the air filter had to be changed, this is included the Ranger TT bottom right and runs to the top left, with the Ranger 4TL this is exactly the opposite due to the Ulobox for the turn signals in the air filter box on the left side, i.e. from bottom left to top right). The fork was fitted with dust sleeves - there were no indicators and tachometers. The Ranger TT was only sold in yellow.

From 1983 around 500 of the model variant Ranger TT ÖBH were delivered to the Austrian Armed Forces until 1985. It largely corresponded to the Ranger TT model , but had a different luggage rack and dispensed with the headlight fairing. It was delivered in RAL7013 semi-gloss, brown-gray, with yellow Ranger TT's simply being painted over in Graz brown-gray.
