Pulkowo ( Russian Пулково ) is a former suburb and today's district of Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) in Russia , about 17 km south of the city center in the Moskovsky district . It is located on Pulkowskoje-Chaussee, the straight continuation of Petersburg's southern arterial road, Moskovsky Prospect.

On a nearby ridge ( Pulkowo Heights ) west of the village is the Pulkowo Observatory , which was founded by the Tsar in 1839 and is still an important astronomical research facility today . The observatory's large refractor with a 30-inch aperture, built in 1880, was the largest lens telescope in the world for several years . Other large instruments were added later, including a. one of the first swiveling radio telescopes.

Today Saint Petersburg Airport ( Pulkowo Airport ) is located about four kilometers northwest of the town, on the densely built-up outskirts of the metropolis . A monitoring station of the SDCM system is located on site .

The village, first mentioned in 1500, was subordinated to the Moskovsky Raion of Leningrad on June 12, 1950 as the seat of a village or settlement Soviet still outside the city limits . By resolution of December 29, 1956, the Settlement Soviet was dissolved and Pulkowo and the associated districts were directly subordinated to the Moskovsky district administration. Pulkowo was incorporated into Leningrad on May 29, 1958 and has not existed as an independent district since then.
