The Purcell Society was founded in 1876 to make the works of English composer Henry Purcell tangible by embarking on a complete edition. With The Yorkshire Feast Song (edited by William H. Cummings) was published in 1878 the first volume of the Complete Edition The Works of Henry Purcell , commonly cited as Purcell Society Edition ( PSE ). The first revised volumes of this edition ( PSE II ) have been published by Novello & Co. in London since 1961 (before the planned complete edition could be completed), and since 2008 the publication program has been continued by the publishing house Stainer & Bell , which now has a Purcell Society Edition Companion Series is published with editions of works of his contemporaries that are important for Purcell's oeuvre.

Some of the first volumes of the complete edition are difficult to grasp today. All volumes of the complete edition can be found in the Central and State Library Berlin .
