The putamen ( putamen , Latin for “shell”, “sleeve”) is one of the core areas of the cerebrum and is therefore part of the gray matter of the brain .

Together with the caudate nucleus, it forms the corpus striatum (short: striatum). This is part of the basal ganglia . The putamen is sometimes combined with the pallidum (also called globus pallidus) to form the nucleus lentiformis ("lens nucleus"). This classification is controversial because ontogenetically putamen to the cerebrum and the pallidum to diencephalon belongs.

As part of the basal ganglia , the putamen plays a role in controlling movement.
