PyGTK is a collection of wrappers for the Python programming language for accessing the GTK + GUI toolkit . PyGTK is licensed as free software under the LGPL . PyGTK was developed by the Gnome programmer James Henstridge .

With the transition to GTK + 3.0 and Gnome 3.0, PyGTK will be replaced by its successor PyGObject , which GObject - Introspection uses to automatically create links to libraries. Unlike PyGTK, PyGObject is also compatible with Python 3.

Python wrappers around comparable GUI toolkits are PyQt for the Qt library and wxPython for wxWidgets .
