Quantitative EEG

The quantitative EEG ( QEEG for short , long quantitative electroencephalography ) is a form of analysis of the EEG in which the basic EEG activity is broken down into its individual frequencies with the aid of a computer and displayed graphically. Measured EEG metrics such as frequency, amplitude and connectivity can be displayed in the form of so-called “brain maps”. This method is mainly used in the field of neurofeedback . Use for diagnosis and therapy control in neurological or neuropsychiatric diseases is possible in principle, but is not used in everyday clinical practice.

EEG in contrast to the QEEG

EEG recordings are mainly used to diagnose epilepsy , to detect age-related disorders of brain maturation, for diseases that are related to declining intellectual performance, for disorders of the sleep-wake rhythm and for the determination of brain death. This primarily involves a visual inspection of the brain wave pattern for typical abnormalities such as B. occur in epilepsy. These are patterns that differ more or less from the basic activity of the EEG. With the help of the QEEG it is technically possible to support the diagnosis of neuropsychiatric illnesses such as dementia , thought disorders or movement disorders as well as giftedness . In practice, however, this technique does not play a role, the reason for this is unknown.
