The Queen's Theater is a former theater in the Liberian provincial capital Sanniquellie in Nimba County in the north of the republic.

history

Classical theater and opera have only played a minor role in Liberian culture so far; the buildings required for this were only required in the capital Monrovia and in Sanniquellie as state representative buildings.

The Queen's Theater was built in the city center of Sanniquellie in the late 1950s and also served as the venue for the July 1959 meeting of three Presidents, Kwame Nkrumah ( Ghana ), Ahmed Sékou Touré ( Guinea ) and William S. Tubman ( Liberia ).

The American company LAMCO (Liberian American-Swedish Minerals Company) built the mining town of Yekepa in the nearby Nimba Mountains in the 1960s to operate the mines there; it was put into operation on November 15, 1963. During this time, the mostly Swedish and American employees visited Sanniquellie, which was also easy to get to by the mine train, as a leisure center. The theater and some bars in town benefited from the mining activity.

During the Liberian civil war , the mining was stopped and the theater closed, it served temporarily as refugee accommodation and depot. The three-story building, which is in a relatively good structural condition, is currently used as a radio station (RADIO NIMBA FM) and as a doctor's office.
