Juan Aldama

Juan Aldama (born January 3, 1774 in San Miguel el Grande , † June 26, 1811 in Chihuahua ) was a Mexican insurgent ( insurgent ) and revolutionary . Together with his brother Ignacio Allende he took part in the first military actions of the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821).

Life

At the beginning of the Revolutionary War was Aldama captain of a cavalry - regiment . He attended conspiratorial independence meetings in Querétaro , organized by Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez and her husband Miguel Domínguez , although he had to travel from San Miguel el Grande (now San Miguel de Allende) in neighboring Guanajuato .

Aldama was in San Miguel when he was informed that the conspiracy had been betrayed to the Spanish colonial authorities. He traveled to Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo ) to brief Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Ignacio Allende . He witnessed the Grito de Dolores ('Scream of Dolores') on the morning of September 16, 1810, which marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence .

He always stayed at Allende's side and fled with him in the winter of 1810 in search of military and political support in the direction of the USA.

In the spring of 1811, Aldama was captured by the Spanish colonial authorities in northern Mexico, brought to Chihuahua , where there was a military tribunal for high treason and sentenced to death . Together with Allende and other members of the rebel army including José Mariano Jiménez and Manuel Santa María , he was brought before a firing squad on June 26, 1811 .

His body was beheaded and his skull was taken to the Alhóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato , where it was displayed publicly in a cage on a corner of the building. His remains were moved to an altar in the cathedral in Mexico City in 1824 . In 1925 they were reburied for the last time, in the mausoleum of the Independence Column in Mexico City.

Honors

Juan Aldama is a national hero in Mexico ; his name is mentioned in the Grito von Dolores , repeated every year on September 15 by the incumbent President of Mexico . Several cities and towns were named after him, including:

• The Municipio Juan Aldama in Zacatecas
• The municipality of Villaldama in Nuevo León
• The municipality of Aldama in Tamaulipas
• The municipality of Aldama in Chihuahua
• The city of León was officially renamed "León de los Aldama" in his honor and his brother Ignacio Aldama
• The municipality of Los Aldamas in Nuevo León was also named after him and his brother
• The village of Juan Aldama, "El Tigre", Sinaloa , outside of Culiacan
• Juan Aldama Street in Mexicali , Baja California , in the Colonia Independencia neighborhood
