Source number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The swelling number of a fiber is a measure of its ability to swell. It indicates the factor by which the volume increases with maximum water absorption. For linseed , for example, source numbers of at least 4 are prescribed in the European Pharmacopoeia . Psyllium husks should increase their volume more than forty-fold if sufficient water is added, i.e. they have a swelling number greater than forty.

Test method

A test method common in pharmacy is described in the European Pharmacopoeia.
