Cross shaker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cross shakers , also known as tray shakers or simply shakers , are rotary conveyors that convey a material to be processed or transported with a back and forth movement of hooks or prongs superimposed on their own rotational movement. Today they are mainly used in combine harvesters for better grain separation, in sweepers and in ventilation technology.

Use in combine harvesters

The term cross shaker was introduced by the American agricultural machinery manufacturer, John Deere AG , in the 1960s and is derived from the English name cross shaker . It is not to be confused with simple cross-vibrating floors, which were built into threshing machines at the end of the 19th century and also referred to as cross-vibrators for short .

In today's combine harvesters, cross shakers are installed behind the threshing drums above the shaking floor. They serve to whirl up the goods that have already been threshed and counteract the formation of mattresses in the straw on the shaking floor. Due to the turbulence in the straw, any remaining grains still in it are freed, which increases the overall grain yield.

The pendulum movement of the rotating tines or hooks of a cross shaker leads to opposite cross movements, which have many advantages, in particular a very safe picking up of the material to be conveyed, its non-directional turbulence and a significant weight saving on the device itself, as the cross movements only very much a few hooks are necessary.
