Cross-section was the name of a popular science television program that was broadcast on Second German Television from 1971 to 1989 . The science journalist Hoimar von Ditfurth presented complex scientific facts and relationships in a form that the television viewer could understand. The physicist Volker Arzt acted as co-moderator of the 45-minute program, which was initially broadcast every two months . The thematic range of the program encompassed almost all areas of science and research. A special focus of the monothematically structured program was the content-related examination of pseudo and borderline sciences. For example, von Ditfurth triggered a public controversy on the subject of astrology with the program The Stars Do Not Lie .

The successful concept of the show - it achieved an audience rating of up to 10 million television viewers - gave rise to the following science programs on German television.

history

The idea for the program came from Hoimar von Ditfurth himself, who had moderated individual science programs on West German Broadcasting since 1964 . The positive response from the audience motivated him to ask the broadcaster for a fixed program slot. However, the WDR was not prepared to give the airtime for the six programs per year that it requested. Thereupon von Ditfurth turned to ZDF, which he was able to convince of his broadcast concept.

The first program was broadcast on January 18, 1971 under the title Journey into the Past . A total of 87 episodes were produced. The program was initially called Cross Section and was renamed Cross Section in 1981 . At this point in time, the cooperation with the magazine Geo began , which published reports on the programs. Together with Volker Arzt, he also published two books on the show, which appeared on the market under the title Dimensions of Life and Cross Section - Dimension of Life II . After the 66th episode on December 17, 1983, Hoimar von Ditfurth withdrew from moderating the show and handed it over to Volker Arzt. The 87th and final episode ran on October 23, 1989 under the title Tower of Babel .
