The quest tree is a peeled oak trunk with a wheel cross attached , a bush of tree branches at the top and two tassels made of birch twigs on the sides of the wheel cross. It stands on a karst cliff in the southern Harz town of Questenberg . The green of the wheel cross and the tassels have been greened with fresh birch leaves by the quest team every year since 1722 on Whit Monday as part of the quest festival. The oak trunk is set anew if necessary, i.e. every 10 years.
