Roman eagle artificial moat

The Römisch-Adler-Kunstgraben is a former mining facility in Johanngeorgenstadt in the Erzgebirgskreis , Saxony .

It is an approx. 4 km long artificial moat that had its origin in Henneberg ( 50 ° 24 ′ 58.4 ″  N , 12 ° 41 ′ 34.2 ″  E ) and along the northern slopes of the Lehmergrundes as far as not preserved city pond on the outskirts of Johanngeorgenstadt led ( 50 ° 25 ′ 45.7 ″  N , 12 ° 43 ′ 10 ″  E ). The trench supplied the pits in this area with the urgently needed service water. When water was in short supply , the Roman eagle water was added to the municipal drinking water pipeline in Johanngeorgenstadt.

The artificial moat was named after the Roman Eagle Pit .

A trench tour led along the course of the trench , which was used for tourism in the summer and developed into a popular excursion destination with benches.

After the Second World War, the artificial trench was no longer needed due to the expansion of uranium mining by SDAG Wismut and in 1948 it was piped. This also meant that the trench tour was no longer a hiking trail. Today the course of the artificial trench between Schwefelbachtal and Lehmergrund can still be seen in the terrain.
