Radio set R-145BM

The R-145BM Tschaika ( Russian Р-145БМ Чайка , German R-145BM Möwe ) is a low-power radio set . The device, which was developed in the Soviet Union, was used in the Soviet Army and other armed forces primarily as a command vehicle and to ensure radio communications for the tactical and operational management level. Since the radio equipment used is now out of date, the radio equipment set in the Russian armed forces has meanwhile been replaced by the vehicles of the R-149BM family.

Base vehicle, observation devices and other equipment

BTR-145BM, loop antenna folded in

A BTR-60 PA armored transport vehicle is used as the base vehicle . It can be distinguished from the other vehicles in the family by the foldable two-part frame antenna that extends over the entire length and width of the vehicle. The vehicle also has a telescopic antenna. The hull, chassis and engine of the BTR-60 remained unchanged. The electrical unit was loaded onto the rear of the vehicle during the march.

The place of the squad leader with the associated operating devices is in the driver's cab in the front part of the vehicle, the other workplaces with the radio equipment in the rear combat area. The crew consisted of at least three soldiers, but could be increased to up to six soldiers for special tasks such as being used as a command vehicle or for hunter command.

As observation devices , the driver and the squad leader each had three corner mirrors for observation under armor protection. The night vision system with active infrared headlights enabled the vehicle to be used at night and with poor visibility.

The vehicle was equipped with a filter ventilation system that offered protection against radioactive fallout and chemical and biological warfare agents.

Radios

R-123 tank radio

The radio set was equipped with one R-130 radio, two R-111 radios and one R-123 tank radio .

The R-130 is a shortwave radio that operates in the frequency range from 1.5 to 10.99 MHz. With a transmission power of 12 to 40 W, a range of 20 to 50 km was achieved with a rod antenna, and up to 350 km with a dipole antenna.

The R-111 is a VHF radio with frequency modulation that could also be used for data transmission. The device had 1281 fixed frequencies in the frequency range from 20 to 52 MHz. With a transmitting power of 75 W, a range of 25 to 35 km was possible with the rod antenna while moving, and 50 to 60 km when stationary.

The R-123, also a VHF radio with frequency modulation, had a usable frequency range of 20 to 51.5 MHz. With a transmission power of 20 W, the range was around 20 km.

For use as a hunter control, AKL VHF radios of the type R-870M (AKL-1) or R-809M2 (AKL-2) were installed. The R-809M2 used amplitude modulation as the type of modulation and had a transmission power of 0.5 W. In addition, an MN-61 magnetic sounder was available for recording and playing back radio traffic. The device used a special wire as the recording medium and allowed a recording time of 5.5 hours.

The power supply was ensured via the AB-1-P / 30-M1-I electrical unit. At a nominal voltage of 30 V direct current, the unit delivered an output of one kilowatt.

The R-145 was also often equipped with the JACHTA T-219 ( Russian ЯХТА ) voice encryption device , since 1972 in the GDR as well. Because of the conspicuous secrecy and protective measures associated with it (cordoning off even in the field, always a guard with an underloaded weapon), the R-145 often achieved a very high level of awareness in the units concerned.
