As Rail ( German  rail or railing ) refers to a Hindernisart in sports such as skateboarding , freeskiing , snowboarding , Street Board , Aggressive inline skating and BMX can be run on the tricks.

Another meaning of the word rail is the "edge" of a surfboard . All surfboards - whether shortboard , longboard or Malibu - have this constructive feature.

The common use of the word in skateboarding arose because when driving around in squares etc. one began to include the railings and barriers as obstacles. Rails are now specially made for skate parks . A rail usually consists of a metal tube that can be bent into various shapes. To reduce the risk of injury, the beginning and the end are rounded down.

The colloquial verb "railen" is used by unicyclists for balancing on a narrow object.
