Rail World

Rail World Inc. is a US company that operates, develops and privatizes railroad companies. The company is based in Chicago .

The company was founded by Edward Burkhardt after he left the Wisconsin Central group of companies he co-founded in 1999 .

In the same year the subsidiary Rail Polska was established in preparation for the privatization of the Polish state railway Polskie Koleje Państwowe . In 2003, the first two companies, "Kolex" and "Zec Trans", started operations.

The company is also a member of the Baltic Rail Services OU consortium, which from 2001 to 2006 owned 66% of the Estonian railway company Eesti Raudtee .

On January 8, 2003, Rail World acquired the former Bangor and Aroostook Railroad together with the Wheeling Corporation, mother of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway , and operated it under the name Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway until bankruptcy in 2013 .

Another subsidiary is the leasing company Rail World Locomotive Leasing, founded in 2001. The company offers former Amtrak locomotives of the EMD F 40 -M and F 40 PH series. These are mainly used by companies with passenger train services.
