Rainis memorial
The Rainis Monument is a memorial to the Latvian poet and politician Rainis in the Latvian capital Riga .
location
The monument is located in the southwestern part of the Esplanade Park, northeast of Riga's old town, north of Kalpak Boulevard ( Latvian Kalpaka bulvaris ). It forms the north-western end of a representatively designed green area running towards the monument.
Design and history
The monumental monument was unveiled on September 11, 1965. The design dates back to 1957 and was made by the sculptor Kārļa Zemdegas . The implementation was then carried out by his students Aivars Gulbis and Laimonis Blumbergs . Dzintars Driba was involved as an architect . The result was a larger-than-life sculpture of Rainis sitting on a pedestal, made of reddish and therefore warm-looking granite . The design of the five-meter-high monument should refer to Raini's work and exude calm and concentration.
On the left side of the monument is the simple name inscription:
- RAINIS
On October 29, 1998, the Esplanade park with the monument inside was entered in the Latvian register of monuments under the number 7863 . In 2007 the monument was restored.
