The Wiesbaden Rally , one of the few “classic” German rallies, continued in the 1950s the tradition of the great international rallies that had been driven before the war. At the same time, however, it built on the experience gained in the international long-distance drives in the course of the many Wiesbaden automobile tournaments. It is organized by the Wiesbaden Automobile Club (WAC).

history

The actual Int. Rally Wiesbaden was held for the first time in 1954. In the years that followed, the Wiesbaden Rally and the tournaments held at the same time, especially the “beauty contest” (car show), became a permanent fixture around the Wiesbaden Kurhaus . Despite all the restrictions that competitions on public roads were subject to, the WAC was able to establish the Wiesbaden Rally on the international motorsport calendar.

The 30th Int. Rally Wiesbaden from May 2 to 5, 1968, which had the addition of "Germany Rally", was rated as a run for the European Rally Championship for drivers and for the German Rally Championship . For the first time, the major part of this long-distance test was moved to Czechoslovakia (ČSSR). The WAC was supported in this by the Automobile Club of Czechoslovakia, and from 1969 to 1971 by the Automobile Club Klatovy. During these years there were large fields of participants with over 250 vehicles. In 1971 the then unknown Walter Röhrl won .

The increasing isolation of the ČSSR from the west made it no longer possible to hold this form. In 1972 the Wiesbaden rally had to be canceled. The attempt to relocate the 1973 rally to France failed due to an objection from a French prefect. The club then withdrew from rallying and increasingly turned to automobile racing.

The new International Rally Wiesbaden

In 2011 the Wiesbaden Automobile Club succeeded in holding the 34th Int. Rally Wiesbaden, together with the support of the Klatovy Automobile Club, a new beginning. Historic vehicles of at least 30 years of age are allowed in this new event. Special tests are also carried out on a route of around 1300 km.
