Ramat Eshkol

Ramat Eshkol is a settlement in the eastern part of the city of Jerusalem . 3573 people live there (as of 2010).

The settlement is named after Levi Eschkol , Prime Minister of the State of Israel from 1963 to 1969.

history

Construction of the settlement began in 1968. It was the first settlement in East Jerusalem to be built after the Six Day War . The land had previously belonged to the Palestinian settlement of Shuafat . In January 1970 the first residents moved to Ramat Eshkol.

In the 1980s and 1990s, many Charedim families moved to Ramat Eshkol. The Charedim now make up the majority of the residents. Her endeavor to shape everyday life in this district according to her way of life led to conflicts with secular Jews on several occasions .
