Ratafia dels Raiers

Ratafia or more precisely Ratafia catalana is a Catalan herbal liqueur made from green walnuts and aromatic herbs. The walnuts and herbs are generally macerated for 40 days and 40 nights with an aniseed schnapps according to an old custom . Then the liquid is poured off and enjoyed as a ratafia. Many Catalan families still make their own homemade ratafia. A major ratafia fair is held in Santa Coloma de Farners in November and in Besalú in December each year.

In Burgundy and Champagne, on the other hand, the term describes a mixture of grape must and brandy, usually enjoyed as an aperitif, comparable to the Pineau des Charentes .
