Rutherglen Town Hall

The town hall of Rutherglen , English Rutherglen Town Hall , is the town hall of the Scottish town of Rutherglen on the north-western edge of the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building history goes back to the Middle Ages . As the building has continued to develop over the centuries, it is difficult to understand which parts of the building come from which era. Among other things, fragments of a former church were incorporated. The tower was raised in the course of a revision in 1710. The tower bell was made in 1635 by Michael Burgerhuys from Middelburg in the Netherlands . In 1841 three tower clocks were for sale in the area. One of these clocks was purchased for the Rutherglen town hall. In the course of an archaeological investigation in the course of the demolition of an extension from 1967, shards from the 14th to 16th centuries were found.

Large parts of today's town hall were built between 1862 and 1863 according to a design by the Scottish architect Charles Wilson .

description
