RECOVER

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RECOVER is a command line program . It was supplied with MS-DOS and PC DOS up to version 5. The program enables a primitive recovery of defective file systems .

application

If directory entries such as files or folders on a partition can no longer be read in and the file system can be regarded as irrevocably corrupt, RECOVER.COM or RECOVER.EXE (depending on the DOS version) should be able to provide help. The prerequisite is that the FAT itself is still reasonably OK.

Any existing subdirectories and the main directory are removed. Then new files with names like FILE0001.REC are created in the main directory based on the FAT cluster chains in the main directory. Damaged sectors are marked accordingly and skipped - if they have not already been done.

If used incorrectly, Recover could cause massive damage and render a system unusable.

In DOS 5, another function was built in that made it possible to transfer a specific file to RECOVER. The sectors of this file are checked against the FAT cluster chain. If there are damaged sectors, the file is shortened accordingly.
