The Red Beach ( Greek κόκκινη άμμος ( f. Sg. ), "Red Sand" ) is a beach with reddish sand in a bay south of Matala on the Greek island of Crete . Another bay called Red Beach is located near Akrotiri on the Greek island of Santorini .

The beach can be reached after a 30-minute walk past the Roman excavations of Matala and over a rocky hill. There is hardly any vegetation on the beach, and umbrellas and deck chairs are occasionally rented out in summer. It is one of the egg-laying areas of the Caretta caretta turtle on Crete and therefore a typical example of the conflict between tourism and nature conservation in Greece.
