Red Rock Island is an uninhabited 2.3 acre island in San Francisco Bay south of the Richmond – San Rafael Bridge . It is the only privately owned island in the bay. It measures 230 meters from north to south, 150 meters from east to west and is 52 meters high. The borders of three counties converge on the high rock : San Francisco , Marin County and Contra Costa County .

The island had changed hands frequently since the 1920s and was sold for $ 49,500 in 1964. In the 1980s there were plans to demolish the upper half of the island for the purpose of building a hotel, which were not implemented.

In 2001 a consortium planned to buy the island as part of compensation for an oil spill in order to protect the bird life. That didn't happen either. The owner is currently trying to sell the island for an asking price of $ 22 million.
