The Redwood Valley Railway is a 2 km long park train with the Lilliput - track width of 15 inches (381 mm) in the unusual scale of 1: 2.4 (5 inches : 1 foot ) in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley , California . It was founded in 1952 by Erich Thomsen as the Tilden South Gate and Pacific Railway and carried over 160,000 passengers per year on its 50th anniversary in 2002.

Driving operation

The Redwood Valley Railway operates real steam locomotives. A journey takes about 12 minutes.

dare

The Redwood Valley Railway operates about 12 wooden wagon that those of Wild West - narrow gauge railways have a gauge of 3 feet (914 mm) as a model. Each of them can accommodate up to eight adults. The stock cars are especially popular with children, but adults can also sit comfortably in them.

There is also a closed freight wagon and multi-purpose wagons that can be used for both passenger transport and track construction work. A flat car built in the 1970s as part of a school project is one of the most widely used wagons. Numerous two-axle lorries, which are colloquially called "Jimmies", are used by maintenance personnel for welding, sleeper replacement and ballast transport.

Noteworthy is a bulk wagon for coal that was used as an additional tender for steam locomotive No. 4 until it was converted to oil-fired steam operation in the mid-1970s. It was equipped with 12 metal folding chairs, but is only rarely used on special trips.

The highlight of the fleet is a short caboose with a centrally attached staff cabin. The full-scale model is based on a 3-foot (914 mm) gauge of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and has followed most of the commercial passenger trains for over 30 years.

Locomotives

Steam locomotive No. 5

The steam locomotives are true-to-scale replicas of Baldwin locomotives from the period 1875 to 1910:

  • No. 2, a B 0-4-0 petrol-hydraulic locomotive "Juniper"
  • No. 4, a 1B1 ( 2-4-2 Columbia) "Laurel"
  • No. 5, a 2′B ( 4-4-0 American) "Fern"
  • No. 7, a 1C1 ( 2-6-2 Prairie ) "Oak"
  • No. 11, a 2'C '( 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler) "Sequoia"

Future projects

There are parts for a 2-4-4 and the shell for a 2-6-0 with the number 13, but they have not yet been assembled. A second caboose and a full-scale model of a saloon car, lavishly decorated with wallpaper, furniture and glass, are currently being built.
