The Reemtsma Foundation for Talented Students is a private, non-profit foundation based in Hamburg. It is named after the Hamburg industrialist family Reemtsma and is supported by the Reemtsma cigarette factories . In 2007 the cigarette manufacturer committed itself to donating 60,000 euros annually to the association for the next four years.

history

The idea to found the company came from the brothers Hermann F. Reemtsma and Philipp F. Reemtsma . Hermann Reemtsma in particular was convinced "that a social order that does not allow every talented young person a real opportunity for advancement must be wrong."

On October 29, 1957, the brothers founded the HF & Ph. F. Reemtsma Gifted Support Organization as a non-profit organization. All association members are employees of the company and work on a voluntary basis. The company Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken provided one million German marks as start-up capital . In the first few years, mainly children were supported by employees. The funding program was soon opened to the general public.

Over the past 50 years, the association's capital has been continuously expanded through donations from the Reemtsma company. In 2006, the Association for the Promotion of Talented students awarded scholarships totaling around 160,000 euros. To date, a total of over 5,000 schoolchildren and students have been able to complete an apprenticeship or study with the help of the funding.

Today the organization for the promotion of talented students has a share capital of 4 million euros. In July 2008, in connection with the integration report of the federal government , the funding agency announced that it would specifically address integration councils in order to receive more applications from young people with a migration background and thus promote their ability to study.

organization

The work promotes talented pupils and students from low-income backgrounds. High school students and students who have not yet reached the age of 30 can apply. In addition to the school or university performance of the applicant, the special talent for the desired training, the social commitment and the level of income of the legal guardian are decisive for the approval of the funding.

Schoolchildren receive a grant of 125 euros. Students get 175 euros. Students who have completed vocational training are funded with 150 euros per month (as of May 2016). A scholarship can be granted from the first semester for the duration of the standard period of study.
