Refill toner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Compatible toner material for refilling used toner cartridges is referred to as refill toner .

The use of refill toner is still a controversial issue. The manufacturers of the printing units propagate the quality and reliability of the original goods, while the third-party manufacturers offer lower prices.

The pros and cons of refill toner are listed below:

Per arguments

  • The use of refill toner is significantly cheaper than buying new cartridges from the printer manufacturer.
  • Even in direct comparison to other compatible Toner Solutions toner refill is the cheapest alternative because not for the production Rebuilt - needs to be reclaimed or replica cartridge or manufactured.
  • The use of refill toner is environmentally friendly . Refilling the toner cartridges can help reduce hazardous waste , since toner cartridges must be disposed of separately as toxic waste.
  • Most providers have already adjusted to type-specific toner cartridges based on years of experience (e.g. how the cartridges are to be filled).

Contra arguments

  • The toner dust (in the case of dry toner) that can be inhaled during the refill process may have negative effects on health.
  • Refill toner can have a negative effect on the quality of the printouts. B. possible color or contrast losses cannot be ruled out.
  • Coarsely ground refill toner can damage the printer roller. In the medium term, this can lead to printing problems such as printouts becoming faint.
  • A melting point that deviates from the original product can result in too much melted toner sticking to the heating roller of the fuser unit (melting point too low) or the toner not sticking firmly enough to the paper and later peeling off (melting point too high). This can cause paper jams in the fuser or a deterioration in print quality.
  • Toner hardening on the developer blade caused by incorrect toner particle size leads to pale streaks in the direction of travel.
  • Consequential damage caused by refill toner is generally not recognized by the device manufacturers as a guarantee.

Legal position

From a legal point of view, refilling the toner is legal. One problem for the manufacturers of compatible products is the consideration of patents on the original products. Recently, however, complaints by printer manufacturers due to patent infringements have always been rejected on the grounds that competition in the free market is not prohibited.

The widespread belief that the use of toner or toner cartridges from third-party suppliers void the guarantee or warranty for the printer is at least wrong under German law. Neither the statutory warranty nor the manufacturer's guarantee depend on the cartridge used. Only if retailers or printer providers can prove that damage was actually caused by third-party toner can they refuse a warranty or guarantee repair. In the context of the warranty, however, the consumer must expect the dealer to refer to the reversal of the burden of proof with regard to possible consequential damage, provided that the first 6 months of the warranty period have expired.
