Regional information and coordination center for Central Asia

The Regional Information and Coordination Center for Central Asia ( CARICC for short ) is an institution that aims to strengthen cooperation and improve the exchange of information between the countries of Central Asia in the fight against drug trafficking .

history

On May 4, 1996, the seven states and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) signed a declaration of intent to strengthen cooperation in the field of drug-related crime. The project started in January 2005. In the following months the details of the future organization and its tasks were worked out by representatives of the participating states. CARICC was founded on July 24, 2006; the organization's headquarters are in Almaty, Kazakhstan . The organization is funded by the UNODC and various other states as well as non-governmental organizations such as the Aga Khan Foundation .

tasks

The main task of the organization is the fight against drug trafficking. In particular, trade across national borders should be combated more effectively through cooperation between national authorities. Central Asia is a particular hotspot for drug-related crime, as large amounts of heroin travel from Afghanistan to Russia via Central Asia.
