The Aga Khan Foundation ( Aga Khan Foundation , AKF for short ) is a non-denominational, non-governmental development aid organization founded in 1967 by Karim Aga Khan IV . The aim of the foundation is to develop and promote creative solutions to problems that hinder social development - especially in Asia and East Africa. With its headquarters in Geneva ( Switzerland ), it has branches and independent affiliates in 15 countries. The Aga Khan Foundation is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network .

Employment priorities

The Aga Khan Foundation concentrates its resources on selected topics of health , education and agricultural development as well as the strengthening of civil societies . It seeks to develop solutions that can be adapted and copied to many circumstances in many different regions by looking for innovative approaches to solving common problems.

Cross-cutting issues that are also dealt with by the Aga Khan Foundation include human resource development , social participation, gender equality and development, and environmental issues.

Funding and grants

The foundation is the largest grant-based social development agency in the Ismaili imamat . The Aga Khan supports the foundation with regular funding for the administration and new program initiatives as well as with contributions to its equipment. The Ismailite community, on the other hand, provides support through voluntary work, professional support and considerable financial resources. Other sources of funding include income from investments and grants from government, institutions or private sector partners, and donations from people around the world.

Grants are usually made available to non-governmental organizations that share the foundation's goals. In some cases, when no suitable partner is available, the foundation supports the building of a new civil society or organizes projects directly. In 2004, the Foundation awarded grants of US $ 149 million to 130 projects in 16 countries.

Prizes and awards

Among other awards for their work, the Foundation's “Aga Khan Rural Support Program” (AKRSP) in Pakistan was awarded the prize for the most innovative development project by the Global Development Network in 2005.
