Aga Khan Development Network

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a non-governmental development aid organization based in Geneva . It is one of the world's largest non-governmental organizations . It was founded by Karim Aga Khan IV. The focus is on health , education and culture as well as rural and economic development with a focus on South and Central Asia and East Africa . In accordance with its basic ethical principles, the organization works in predominantly Muslim societies, but regardless of belief, origin or gender.

The AKDN is financed by the Aga Khan Foundation , into which the members of the Nizari Ismailis contribute a tenth part of their income.

In September 2004, a partnership agreement ( Memorandum of Understanding ) was signed between the BMZ and the AKDN . The Federal Government supports AKDN projects in Afghanistan , Tajikistan and Pakistan as well as in the Near and Middle East . To this end, KfW and its subsidiary, DEG - Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft, work long-term with AKDN. The Federal Foreign Office and the Aga Khan Foundation are working closely together on issues of cultural preservation in the reconstruction of the Babur Garden in Kabul , Afghanistan.

Every three years the AKDN presents the Aga Khan Award for Architecture , one of the most important architectural prizes.
