The University of Central Asia (UCA) was founded in 2000. The presidents of the Central Asian states of Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan as well as Karim Aga Khan IV. , The founder of the Aga Khan Development Network , signed the international charter for the establishment of this private, secular university. It has been ratified by the national parliaments of the three states and registered with the United Nations . The cost of building the university is around US $ 200 million , of which 15 million is donated by the Aga Khan development aid. Various non-Asian countries such as Canada , Germany , Japan and Switzerland provide financial aid.

The UCA is a private, independent university with its own administration. The university has three campuses, which are spread across the three contracting states. The aim of the University of Central Asia is to promote the socio-economic development of Central Asian peoples and to raise the educational standard for the training of future decision-makers while at the same time preserving the cultural traditions in the region.

Campus and facilities

The central administration is located in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek . The three campuses of the UCA are in the Kazakh city of Tekeli , the oldest in the Tajik city of Chorugh , and the third and youngest campus in the Kyrgyz city of Naryn . The latter opened for the first students in September 2016. The construction of the campus in Naryn stood still for a long time because it is located directly on a geological fault line .

The three campuses have a similar structural structure. They include academic and administrative facilities, residential accommodation, a library, and cultural and sports facilities. Each campus offers accommodation for up to 1,200 students and around 100 teachers and employees. Publicly accessible park landscapes adorn the campus. The Japanese architect Arata Isozaki planned the campus.

Course offer

Following an international model, the UCA offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, all of which are held in English. English courses are offered to prepare for a degree.

The four-year undergraduate School of Arts and Sciences offers programs in the humanities (including history, languages, philosophy), social sciences (including political science, sociology, anthropology) and natural sciences (including biology, chemistry, technology). The Graduate School of Development that builds on this offers a broader range of specializations. So u. a. Programs in human resource development, environmental and resource management, regional planning or tourism and leisure are offered.

In addition to the academic offer, there is the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE), a program that offers formal, university education without an academic degree. It offers the opportunity to acquire additional professional and social skills, including a. dealing with computers, foreign languages, corporate management or soft skills .
