The serial value counter on sheets of stamps is a technical accounting aid for those involved in the sale of stamps . It shows the value of the remaining stamps on a remaining sheet, provided that the sheet has been used on the right row of stamps. The valuation is carried out by determining the value given above the last complete row, to which the total value of the brand values still available in the partial row must be added. The totalizer attached to the left edge of the counter arch helps to determine this value , which - usually starting from the top - names the total of the marks in a row reached in each line.

The serial value counter mostly appears on the upper edge of stamp sheets in the form of pure values or as a combination of value and currency. In the case of small sheets or the sheets of ten used by Deutsche Post AG since 1994 , which are generally sold in pieces, there is no need for a serial value counter to be printed.

Postage stamps with sheet edge pieces , especially those with an indication of the serial value, belong to the pieces particularly sought after by philatelists .
