Cleaning water

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Facial tonic or tonic is suitable for cleaning, toning and refreshing the skin . The main component of this cleansing water is distilled water , which is intended to remove water-soluble components from the skin such as sweat and dirt. Degreasing and disinfecting products contain between 20% and 50% alcohol ( ethanol or isopropanol ). The alcohol content supports the cleaning effect of the dirt particles remaining on the skin, such as B. Cream residues, skin oil and other fat-soluble ingredients. Since it evaporates easily on the skin, it draws heat from the skin ( evaporation cold ) and thus has a refreshing and cooling effect. Cooling substances such as menthol or camphor support this effect. Astringents such as witch hazel extract (plant extract from witch hazel ), alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) or acids (citric, lactic or tartaric acid) have a de-swelling effect on the upper layer of the skin, contract the pores and make the skin more resistant. Anti-inflammatory, calming ingredients such as bisabolol or azulene from chamomile can also be added.

Facial toners have a pH value (4 - 5.5) that is acidic in order to restore the skin's own pH value after washing the skin. Then the application of care products follows. An appropriate product should be selected depending on the skin type and skin condition. Dry skin is characterized by a lack of moisture (often confused with a lack of fat) and should be treated with low-alcohol or alcohol-free cleaning water, while oily skin can tolerate facial toner containing alcohol.
