description

Rice knife at the rice harvest (2015)

The Cambodian rice knife has a slightly curved, single-edged blade. The blade is flat, has no hollow grind and no central ridge and is at the place rounded. The blade is attached to a slightly curved wooden shaft. A curved, round piece of horn is attached to the wooden handle together with the blade. This bow is used to hold or bend the rice plants when cutting. The bookletis polished, decorated with brass rings on the handle and the pommel with traditional carvings. When harvesting, the plants are gathered together with the help of the horn arch. The sheaf is fixed by hand. To cut through, the knife is tilted to the side so that the blade can reach behind the sheaf. A forward cut then cuts through the sheaf. The rice knife is traditionally used by the people of Cambodia to harvest rice.
