The Merciful Sisters RSM are an international community of Roman Catholic women. They have made it their business to support people who suffer from poverty, disease and a lack of education. Particular attention is paid to women and children. The sisters have committed themselves to the evangelical councils (advice) on poverty , celibate chastity and obedience and value service to others. They take part in the life of their environment. Many sisters are involved in teaching, nursing, and community service. Your community also takes an active part in political processes.

history

The fellowship began when Catherine McAuley used an inherited fortune to open a House of Mercy in Dublin. This offered educational, religious and social services for poor women and children. Since such offers were traditionally offered by nuns instead of lay people , local resistance arose. Church administration agreed then a non klausuriertes to found religious institute. The sisters of this institute became known as "Walking Nuns" because they were able to look after the poor outside the monastery walls. The original House of Mercy still exists today on Lower Baggot Street, Dublin as the Mercy International Center .

organization

The Sisters of Mercy RSM are active as a religious and charitable organization in several countries. They are mainly found in English-speaking countries: Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1965 a group of sisters was sent from the USA (Burlingame in Illinois) to Peru.

In Germany, the Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM), in the tradition of Catherine McAuley, have been running the “meeting and counseling center”, a psychological practice, on Liebfrauenplatz in Mainz since 1990 . In 1992 they took over the St. Marienhaus in Breuberg in Hesse, known as "Kloster Breuberg" .
